Volunteering Builds Stronger Teams

A web team that only ever sees its own clients gets stale. We make sure ours doesn’t.

Every member of the Clickingmad team gets one paid Friday a month to volunteer with a cause of their choice, plus an annual team day where we all turn up at the same project. It’s a deliberate decision that goes back about a decade. It started as a goodwill gesture and has become one of the most useful things we do for our clients, because the people doing your project come back from those days sharper, more empathetic and better at solving the problem in front of them.

Where the team volunteer

A short list of recurring causes the team supports, plus space for new ones. Examples:

  • A West Midlands hospice where two of our developers maintain the site and train staff.
  • A youth charity where our designer runs an annual workshop on online safety.
  • A regional food bank that gets a hand on the rota the week before Christmas.
  • A community garden that needed a website and got two of our writers for a Saturday.

How it makes us better at the day job

Three reasons we keep doing it, in plain language.

  • It keeps the team. People stay at agencies that mean something. They leave the ones that don’t.
  • Volunteering puts you in front of people who are not in your client base. That breaks the echo chamber that every agency falls into.
  • It teaches you to do useful work fast and cheaply. Charities don’t have £40,000 to spend on a rebuild. They need the win that fits in two days.

If you run a cause and you’d like a Friday from the team, the form is below. We can’t say yes to everyone but we say yes more often than we say no.
